Handicap International is an independent and impartial international solidarity organization, which intervenes in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflicts and disasters. Working alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, it acts and speaks out to meet their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights.
The network of 8 national associations (Germany, Belgium, Canada, the United States, France, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) works constantly to mobilize resources, to co-manage projects and to spread the principles and actions of the organization.
HI is committed to an employment policy in favour of disabled workers.
CONTEXT:
The Humanity & Inclusion Making It Work Gender and Disability project has been working alongside women and girls with disabilities since 2014 to support lasting changes aimed at eliminating violence against women and girls with disabilities.
The MIW Gender and Disability project is strong of a project team located in HI headquarters in Lyon and a network of 20+ organizations from 11 countries in Africa (Burundi, Cameroon, Kenya, Mali, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda and Uganda, and lately Senegal, Togo and Benin). Our Country partners are addressing Gender based violence against women and girls with disabilities: their activities cover all aspects of GBV prevention and response, inclusion of women with disabilities in mainstream GBV programs, including access to SRH services, advocating for more inclusive GBV policies, etc.
We are supporting our Country Partners through technical and financial support, allowing them to scale up their activities and improve their impact and sustainability.
In 2021, the MIW project has been entering a new 3-year phase that is characterized by a significantly reinforced technical support to Country Partners, through field visits, development of job aids, capacity development linked with updated international guidelines and standards in GBV/SRH and inclusion of persons with disabilities. We have been building on the already established partnerships to reinforce their programs and build on their sustainability. We have been identifying new partnerships with formal and informal groups or women with disabilities addressing violence against women in West Africa. We have been increasing our expertise in intersectional approach to better support country partners in adopting an intersectional lens in their activities.
