Profil
- You hold a master in the field of medicine, public health or epidemiology.
- You have strong cross-cultural competencies.
- You are comfortable working in low-resource settings and challenging environments.
- You have strong conceptual and organisational skills, experience in outbreak management is an asset.
- You have experience in data collection, experience in research is an asset.
- You preferably have working experience in Sub-Saharan Africa, including project management, working experience in DRC is an asset.
- You speak and write fluently French (mandatory) and English; knowledge of Swahili is a strong asset.
- You are able to work independently but are a good team player.
- You have the ability and willingness to work fulltime in DRC, partly (about 80%) in provincial sites.
Description
Research coordinator based in DR Congo for outbreak research on Monkeypox (5 months)

Our researchers conduct more than 200 scientific projects in the fields of tropical medicine and international health. The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) has been active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since more than 20 years and is involved in capacity building projects to improve research in public health, clinical sciences, and biomedical sciences.
Through longstanding partnerships with Congolese institutions, ITM was involved in research activities related to the latest Ebola, Chikungunya, COVID-19 and Monkeypox-outbreaks. ITM has been reinforcing its presence in DRC since 2020 with the establishment of an ITM DRC office, including a team of scientists.
We are now looking for a research coordinator with a medical or epidemiological background to supervise and coordinate an outbreak research project on a Monkeypox epidemic in Maniema province of DRC. You will supervise research activities on the field in DRC for a total duration of 5 months, starting from Augustus 2022.
Assignment
- You supervise, coordinate, and manage the outbreak research activities in Tunda Health Zone in Maniema province together with the partner institutions. These will include:
- Follow-up the setting up done by the partner NGO Alima of a passive and active surveillance system for MPX and function as liaison person between Alima and ITM;
- Improve local data collection with Alima supported health staff and specific scientific project staff;
- Supervise a seroprevalence study and a potential household transmission study;
- Facilitate sampling and coordinate sample transport for MPX diagnostics.
- You will work intensively together with partner institution in the field:
- Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB)
- Alima (Alliance for International Medical Action)
- Ministry of Health at local and national level
- You will be based in DRC, and travel between Kinshasa and Maniema Province with long stays in the field under hard living conditions (Tunda and Kindu).
- You report directly to the ITM DRC country representative, Inge Van Cauwenberg, for management issues and to prof. Laurens Liesenborghs, head of the unit emerging infectious disease (based at ITM, Antwerp).
- You liaise between project supervisors in ITM DRC, ITM Antwerp and partner institutions Kinshasa and the local team to facilitate reporting (No technical, financial responsibilities).
