Profil

REQUIREMENTS

Education:      

  • Education level in social sciences, social communication, nurse or teaching.
  • Training in health promotion is an asset.

Experience:    

  • Minimum two years’ experience in social work and/or community mobilization with migrant or refugee populations
  • Experience in health promotion activities is an asset

Languages

  • Good oral and written French and English language skills.

Description

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international humanitarian aid organization that provides assistance in more than 60 countries to populations in distress, to victims of natural or manmade disasters and to victims of armed conflicts, without discrimination and irrespective of origin, religion, creed or political affiliation.

Health Promoter IEC Officer – MSF Belgium - Brussels

CONTEXT

The MSF mission in Belgium intends to address within a multi-disciplinary and collaborative approach, the health needs and main social determinants of populations in situation of exclusion in parallel to pro-actively engaging on the visibility of the problematics and promoting institutional change. The target population includes migrants in transit, in stagnation, undocumented migrants and those in administrative detention.

Today, the Belgian mission is structured around 4 axes of intervention:

  • Mental health:  first line mental health care is provided at the HUB humanitaire and in shelters & squats.
  • Outreach: the mobile team is providing sensitization, prevention, control of infections, health promotion, primary health care and referral to specialized medical care if necessary.
  • Emergencies: the mission responds to specific identified emergencies when needed.
  • Advocacy & communications’ interventions on the reception crisis

RESPONSIBILITIES

Implement Health Promotion/IEC (Information, Education, Communication) activities with patients and local population to raise their knowledge and skills on relevant medical topics.

  • Inform patients and communities about MSF services and all psycho-medico-social services and institutions available in Brussels.
  • According to medical priorities, deliver information to the patients and community on specific health (such as skin conditions and infectious diseases) and mental health topics.
  • Implement activities of health education and awareness (outreach activities, squats, indoor activities such as in the Humanitarian Hub, etc.) under the indications and supervision of the HP Supervisor.
  • Under the guide of HP Supervisor, assess the impact of activities (with questions, verifications and behaviors, observations), and report problems, success and constraints to him/her.
  • Collect all type of information related to specific health and living conditions of the population, in particular to identify the most vulnerable populations to target.
  • Report to HP Supervisor: activities, problems met, strengths and constraints.
  • Participate in creation of any material needed for the activities of information, education and communication.
  • Reflect with the MSF team to adapt activities and messages to ensure smooth flow of activities, avoiding misunderstandings and improving the quality of services.
  • Take proactive and reactive measures in the places where the most vulnerable people are (precarious housing, squats, unauthorised communities, etc.): prevention, awareness-raising, counselling, referral to care adapted to the beneficiaries’ needs, etc.
  • Support the outreach team in its daily activities.
  • Monitor data and produce regular reports.

CONDITIONS

  • Expected starting date: June 1st 2023
  • Location*: Brussels (Belgium)
  • Contract type: Fixed-term contract – Full time
  • Contract duration: until December 31st 2023 – extension possible
  • Salary according to MSF-OCB HQ grid

*Due to administrative constraints given the duration of the contract, candidates must already have the permanent right to work in Belgium (European Union citizen) or a residence permit/document with the mention “access to the labour market unlimited”.
